Interview with an Artist

Today I had pleasant interview with a close friend, Don Solomon, a young drummer with whom I go to school with. Don and I have very different views on the music we play and our approaches, so it is always a treat to pick his mind a bit on the subject of music.

TV- How did you first get your start in music? What inspired you to pick the instrument you played?

DS- I started music in elementary school playing in concert band. I played the bass drum and it was bigger than I was and I remember having to put my leg up on the hoop of the drum to mute it

TV- Who would you say your biggest influences are and why?

 DS- My biggest influence in terms of getting me to play was my first drum teacher, in terms of musically I think Max roach is by single biggest influence, but also Billy Higgins and Philly Joe Jones.

TV-How much do you practice in a day on average, and what are your goals when practicing?

 DS- I try to get at least 2 hours of practice in a day but often it can get to 5 hours or more, and I have stayed in the practice room until 2 or 3 am several times. My goals when practicing are to be able to play and stay relaxed, and also to be able to not have to think about what I’m doing on the bandstand. Play badly in the practice room so I don’t play badly on stage.

TV-What do you think are the most important parts of being a musician?

 DS- The most important part about being a musician is playing music and having determination. You can’t be soft and play this music, you have to want it bad.

TV- What do you think of the climate of the jazz scene today?

DS-I think the climate of the jazz scene is really interesting because there are a lot of people graduating from universities that are playing correctly but sometimes lack feeling/emotion. Or if the question is aimed a different way, I think the social aspect is pretty cool, I’ve met a lot of great cats around and from what I’ve seen there’s great energy all around. I’ve definitely heard about women being disrespected and treated badly, and that’s not very cool.

A series of inciteful and deep answers, Don is certainly one of the cats to watch out for in the up and coming scene, having already played with some incredible musicians, including sitting in for the great Joe Farnsworth. This interview was a pleasure to conduct and I hope y’all enjoyed it as well.
